Kitchen Cabinet Design Tips

When you decide to remodel your kitchen, you might start to look for different kitchen design ideas that appeal to you. There are many elements involved in designing a kitchen to meet the needs of your family, your budget and the space itself. Whether you’re looking for design ideas for a small kitchen or large ones, you will need to consider your kitchen cabinets. There are many elements to kitchen design but in this post we focus on kitchen cabinets and cabinet design tips since it’s one of the most noticeable aspects of any kitchen.

Throughout this blog post we’ve included some of our favourite kitchen cabinet designs that we’ve done for our customers.

Invest in strong and high-quality cabinets.
You want to protect your renovation investment and kitchen cabinets are something that you will be opening and closing every day. One of the best tips we give our clients is to invest in quality cabinets. You want the cabinets you choose to stand the test of time and you don’t want to have to replace them prematurely. The ultimate in strength and durability are cabinets built with plywood as the base. They will last longer and will hold hinges better than particle board. Plywood might not be in everyone’s budget but it worth taking a good look at. Hardwoods, a quality finish and strong hinges are also crucial to choosing durable cabinets.

Kitchen cabinets that go to the ceiling.
When possible include kitchen cabinets that go all the way up to the ceiling. By having cabinets that fall short of the ceiling, they get dusty and often become an unintended home for all those kitchen trinkets you never end up using. If you feel like it makes your kitchen seem closed off, consider installing glass fronts to open up the space and make it feel more airy.

Choose a consistent design aesthetic.
Some people want their kitchen to fit in with the overall décor of their home while others want the kitchen to be a stand-alone room that speaks for itself. Think about the whole picture before you choose your kitchen cabinets – have you chosen your kitchen countertops yet? What about the appliances? Have you picked your paint colour or pre-chosen accessories that you can’t live without? Whether you want a contemporary aesthetic or a traditional, cozy space, be sure you consider all pieces of the puzzle before you get out your credit card.

Don’t over decorate.
Even after you’ve chosen your dream kitchen cabinets, make sure you leave some breathing room. Don’t feel the need to fill every square inch of your kitchen with storage space. A good kitchen design will incorporate storage, function and aesthetics. If you have a range on one side of the kitchen, you’ll probably want there to be counter space around it, and under that counter space is the perfect spot for storing things like pots and pans.

Our list of kitchen cabinet design tips is by no means exhaustive, but it should give you a good starting point if you’re thinking about doing a kitchen renovation
