How to Define Your Home Design Style Before You Renovate

You’re ready to renovate. You’ve asked the right questions and chosen a contractor. But choosing a style? That’s where things can get tricky, but they don’t have to. After 80 years in the reno business, we’ve learned a thing or two (or 50) about turning inspiration into a home that feels just right.

Here are a few ways to start defining your style:

Get Pinning

Pinterest is one of the best ways to get a feel for what you love. Create boards for the rooms you’re renovating and start pinning anything that catches your eye. Don’t overthink it, just save what you like.

Browse Design Magazines

There’s something about flipping through a beautifully curated home magazine that just hits differently. Publications like House & Home, Style at Home, and Canadian Interiors showcase real homes, expert design tips, and the latest trends.

Find #Inspo from Designers and Creators

Sometimes, the best way to discover your style is to see how others bring theirs to life. Instagram is full of designers, stylists, and home enthusiasts sharing their latest projects, décor ideas, and behind-the-scenes looks at real spaces. Explore #InteriorDesign and #HomeDecor to find inspo, and check out these Canadian designers who bring fresh ideas and unique perspectives to every space:

  • Jillian Harris: A designer who shares bright and airy design inspirations.
  • Sarah Richardson: Renowned for her elegant and timeless designs.
  • Sarah Gunn: Design expert from Cityline, known for approachable, stylish interiors and creative projects.
  • Tiffany Pratt: Known for her bold use of colour and unique design approach.
  • Mia Parres: Co-host of HGTV’s “The Expandables,” she shares a mix of design inspiration and behind-the-scenes glimpses.

Build a ‘Dream Book’

You can use a binder, scrapbook, or even a box to collect bits of inspiration.

Include:

  • Magazine pages or printed images you love
  • A list of must-haves
  • Paint chips, fabric swatches, flooring samples
  • Design ideas or articles
  • Questions for your contractor

When it’s decision time, your dream book will be your go-to guide.

Pay Attention to What You Already Love

Look around your home. What pieces make you happiest? Think about the spaces that make you feel comfortable and inspired like your favourite café, a cozy hotel, or even a friend’s kitchen. Noticing what draws you in can help you define a style that feels like you.

Binge Some HGTV

Watching how designers transform spaces, mix materials, and solve layout challenges can help you refine what you like (and what you don’t). Seeing it all come together can make it easier to shape your own vision.

Visit Showrooms and Model Homes

Walk through kitchen and bath showrooms, check out model homes, home shows, or room settings in furniture and appliance stores.

Pay attention to what feels inviting and functional; it’s a great way to experience different aesthetics firsthand.

Test Drive a Style

Before committing to a full renovation, experiment with small updates. Try peel-and-stick wallpaper, new throw pillows, or a statement rug in a style you’re considering. Living with it for a few weeks can help you decide if it feels right.

Think About How You Want the Space to Feel

Instead of focusing on a specific “look,” consider the atmosphere you want to create. Do you want your home to feel calm and airy? Cozy and layered? Bold and energetic? Once you define the mood, it’s easier to find styles that match.
