We decided to become a certified living wage employer to publicly show our support of the living wage initiative and our internal company commitment to \u201cPutting People First\u201d and be a company that values transparency, equity and integrity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A living wage reflects what earners in a family need to bring home, based on the actual costs of living in a specific community. The living wage gets families out of severe financial stress by lifting them out of poverty and providing a basic level of economic security.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A living wage:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>enables working families to have sufficient income to cover reasonable costs\u00a0<\/li><li>promotes social inclusion\u00a0<\/li><li>supports healthy child development principles\u00a0<\/li><li>ensures that families are not under severe financial stress\u00a0<\/li><li>is a conservative, reasonable estimate<\/li><li>engenders significant and wide ranging community support\u00a0<\/li><li>is a vehicle for promoting the benefits of social programs such as childcare<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"680\" height=\"453\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mennosmartin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/msm-blog-oct-content-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2838\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mennosmartin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/msm-blog-oct-content-2.jpg 680w, https:\/\/www.mennosmartin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/msm-blog-oct-content-2-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>As Trent Bauman shared in the past, \u201c<em>The renovation sector is notorious for being linked to the underground economy where it is the wild west: there are many renovators who avoid &amp; skirt regulations, avoid taxes and promote the \u2018race to the bottom\u2019 in terms of cost cutting, including paying terrible wages<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since we\u2019ve adopted the living wage standards we\u2019ve realized that while on the surface, it might seem to some that it costs more to pay a living wage, the benefits actually show us a different story:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>our employees stay with our company for very long periods of time<\/li><li>we save time and energy on integrating staff into our company culture<\/li><li>long term staff ensures we can deliver outstanding quality service to our clients<\/li><li>paying staff well also helps us attract top quality people who really want to join us and stay as long term employees<\/li><li>our staff take pride in working for a company that values them so highly<\/li><li>it is an investment in our community and helps ensure prosperity in Waterloo Region<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"680\" height=\"453\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mennosmartin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/msm-blog-oct-content-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2829\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mennosmartin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/msm-blog-oct-content-1.jpg 680w, https:\/\/www.mennosmartin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/msm-blog-oct-content-1-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-medium\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"150\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mennosmartin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/OLWN-logo-2019-800x410-1-300x150.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2832\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mennosmartin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/OLWN-logo-2019-800x410-1-300x150.png 300w, https:\/\/www.mennosmartin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/OLWN-logo-2019-800x410-1-768x385.png 768w, https:\/\/www.mennosmartin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/OLWN-logo-2019-800x410-1.png 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p>Since discovering these benefits for ourselves, we\u2019ve taken steps to reach out to all of the partners we regularly contract for trades services on our projects to encourage them to explore the living wage initiative for their own businesses. When we hire subcontractors, Living Wage certification is now an indicator we use to assess potential service providers on our projects.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>We fully believe that by taking care of our team with a living wage, it provides the support they need to do their best on the job for our clients as well as have a safe and comfortable home life. Strength and resilience come from trust within a community, no matter the size.
