Universal design focuses on making a home more comfortable, safe and accessible for everyone, regardless of age or physical ability. Simply put, universal design is good design for everyone, and something we have incorporated into our renovation designs for the years. Here are a number of universal design elements we consider for the home renovations we <g class=\"gr_ gr_102 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace\" id=\"102\" data-gr-id=\"102\">compl<\/g>ete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">In the Kitchen<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mennosmartin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/homyfeed.com_.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1595\"\/><figcaption>Photo credit: https:\/\/homyfeed.com<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Flexible appliances like under-the-counter refrigerator drawers make a kitchen more accessible for someone in a wheelchair. <\/li><li>Install pulls instead of knobs on cabinets and drawers. They are much easier on arthritic hands.<\/li><li>To accommodate a cook who uses a wheelchair, leave space under the sink, cooktop, and prep counter, install pull-down shelves in the upper <g class=\"gr_ gr_14 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear Punctuation only-del replaceWithoutSep\" id=\"14\" data-gr-id=\"14\">cabinets,<\/g> and choose a range with controls on the front.<\/li><li>A contrasting edge-band along countertops makes it easier for someone with failing eyesight to see the edge of the countertop.<\/li><li>Elevating the dishwasher accommodates people in wheelchairs or who have a hard time bending.<\/li><li>Choose a sink that raises or lowers at the touch of a button.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mennosmartin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/dmc-employ.org_.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1594\"\/><figcaption>Photo credit: <a href=\"https:\/\/dmc-employ.org\">dmc-employ.org<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>In the Bathroom<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mennosmartin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Woodruff.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1596\"\/><figcaption>Kitchener Bathroom Renovation<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Instal low or no-threshold showers. <\/li><li>Install countertops with contrasting edge-banding.<\/li><li>In the tub\/shower, choose an adjustable-height showerhead so the showerhead can easily be positioned at a comfortable height for anyone. <\/li><li>Use anti-scald or pressure balancing valves. <\/li><li>Offset shower and\/or tub controls outside the tub or shower so they can be easily accessed. <\/li><li>Install grab bars or blocking (at the very least) between the studs so that grab bars can easily be added in the future.<\/li><li>Install vanities of different heights. <\/li><li>Choose a tilting sink.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"658\" height=\"870\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mennosmartin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/e647b082cfb4ba0f80b5f4e7cc0fd2f5.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2325\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mennosmartin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/e647b082cfb4ba0f80b5f4e7cc0fd2f5.jpg 658w, https:\/\/www.mennosmartin.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/e647b082cfb4ba0f80b5f4e7cc0fd2f5-227x300.jpg 227w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 658px) 100vw, 658px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Throughout the House<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Choose lever handles instead of doorknobs.<\/li><li>Design hallways and doorways that are 32 inches wide or more.<\/li><li>Avoid changes in floor height, including thresholds.<\/li><li>Lower switches and raise receptacles so that they can be reached from a seated position.<\/li><li>Avoid placing light switches at the back of countertops. <\/li><li>Motion sensor lights can increase safety especially in the bathroom and outdoor areas.<\/li><li>LED ground tracking lighting along hallways and outdoor pathways help with navigation. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>With all of these options, it\u2019s important to remember that universal design doesn\u2019t mean you have to sacrifice style for function.
